CoolCLE PODCAST #05: Halloween and Goth Yoga

A special Halloween-themed episode this week with details of Goth Yoga and 4th Annual Halloween Flea Market and Art Fair on October 28th. Trish Metzger, teacher of Goth Yoga, talks us through how this alternative to the popular physical exercise is providing a welcoming atmosphere and combining goth music with traditional practice.

Local bands provide the spooky backdrop including the popular Nox Arcana (pictured below). With origins in Cleveland, this duo is renowned for creating haunting, gothic-themed soundscapes with classic horror references. Two Canton bands feature on this week’s episode. The Scenic Route will be at Iggy’s Bar in Lakewood on October 26th. You can snag a copy of its EP, Ghosts, and some cash prizes for best costume at the event. And Night Goat, a metal band, will be at the Buzzbin on October 30th in Canton along with Detroit’s Child Bite.

And we introduce a duo from Columbus called Damn the Witch Siren (pictured above). They will be gracing the Buzzbin in Canton on November 17th with its catchy, club music with sultry themes, dubbed “witch rock.” Give it a listen.

Sherrod Brown for U.S. Senate; Rich Cordray for Governor

Both of the major races on the Tue 11/6 ballot – for U.S. Senator and governor – feature Democratic candidates addressing bread-and-butter issues and Republican candidates focusing on smears and misleading claims. That suggests they don’t want voters to know their policy stances – understandably, because they’d be unpopular.

Sherrod Brown has always shown active concern for ordinary working people – he’s famous for engaging random people he encounters in long conversations – and Rich Cordray has been dogged in defending the public against deceptive corporate tactics. Their opponents are cynically exploiting the #MeToo movement, but their voting records show they’re no friends to women – or much of anyone else without big money.

Hops Foster Hope

Imagine being a child in the foster care system, being unsure of where you’ll live or go to school next year – or next month. And when you age out, there may be no family to fall back on if you hit snags in launching into adulthood. The organization Fostering Hope was founded to be a safety net for such kids who numbers have increased 43% since 2013, in part due to the opioid crisis.

The group’s 3rd annual Fostering Hops benefit at the new Van Aken District stars hops from Sibling Revelry Brewery, food trucks, DJs, a silent auction and a graffiti artist. “This fundraiser allows Fostering Hope to impact the lives over 1,000 foster youth here in Cuyahoga County every year,” says Fostering Hope executive director Nicole Shefrin. Rocking the House

Ohio City residents Joel Elvery and Lynne Phares started booking concerts in the living room of their sprawling Victorian house eight years ago, as Mechanic Street House Concerts. With audiences of 50-60 people, they introduced music fans to artists they loved – that was their only criterion for a booking – in an intimate environment.

This week, they’re presenting two acts they’ve hosted before – Arc Iris and Qiet – in the more capacious BOP STOP. They say this won’t be a regular thing; they just thought the venue would be a better fit for the artists. But it’s a great chance to meet Lynne and Joel, learn what they do and get yourself on their mailing list to learn about upcoming shows. Sat 10/27.

Two Perspectives on Rock & Roll Last year, music photographers Anastasia Pantsios and Joe Kleon held a three-day extravaganza at AsiaTown�s Loftworks Gallery called Rock/Roll Perspectives, sharing hundreds of their favorite images, from classic rockers to today’s pop stars. It was so successful and well-attended they�re doing it again Friday November 9-Sunday November 11. More info here.

Fair Trade Is Flourishing

It’s been nearly 40 years since the nonprofit One World Shop, now located in Rocky River, opened. Back then, people were just starting to hear about “fair trade,” a model of doing business where items sold were made by artisans and craftspeople paid a living wage that enabled them to care for their families. “Fair trade relationships are transparent and long-term, and really work to strengthen an artisan’s entire community,” says One World’s manager Laura Potter-Sadowski.

To help fund their work, One World Shop is holding a benefit at Around the Corner in Lakewood, which is almost literally around the corner from the shop. “Our goal is to use the funds we raise to support our outreach programs,” says Potter-Sadowski. Fri 10/26.

Experience the Decadence of Cabaret at BW

Explore the dark, heady and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. A music theatre classic with relevance for today, Cabaret takes the stage as a co-production of Baldwin Wallace University’s acclaimed music theatre program and the department of theatre and dance.

Directed by Victoria Bussert, choreographed by Gregory Daniels, with music direction by Beth Burrier, musical numbers include “Willkommen,” “Cabaret,” “Don’t Tell Mama” and ‘”Two Ladies.” a book by Joe Masteroff, based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood; music by John Kander; lyrics by Fred Ebb. Halloween with Nature

A Halloween party that includes watching otters at play is obviously not very scary. That’s “Owls & Howls” at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, where visitors will get to decorate pumpkins, make masks, play games and watch animal demonstrations. Costumed kids 12 and under are free! Sat 10/27.

* Kids can learn to write spooky, suspenseful stories with Lake Erie Ink at the Cleveland History Center. Sat 10/27.

Celebrate Halloween With Not-So-Scary Owls & Howls

Hoot like an owl, howl like a coyote and hoof it down to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History for an early Halloween treat this Sat 10/27! Enjoy games, crafts, pumpkin decorating and special animal demonstrations, all in a not-so-spooky setting!

Live animal demonstrations will take place every hour from 10:30AM to 2:30PM outside in Ralph Perkins II Wildlife Center & Woods Garden- Presented by KeyBank (rain or shine). Meet “roaming” animal ambassadors up close throughout the event. Learn about animal enrichment and make a Halloween treat for a cat or dog at home. Have a howling good time with hands-on activities fit for the season and make a mask to take home in Smead Discovery Center.

The CVNP Conservancy, which hosts on the Countryside Markets in Howe Meadow in the summer and the Old Trail School in the winter, is doing something new: weekly Sunday markets in an incubator-style facility in Akron’s Northside neighborhood. The markets will feature locally grown food and locally made products, artisans and live music. The grand opening party is this week. Sun 10/28.

Cleveland Legend Joe Lovano Celebrates at BOP STOP

Multi Grammy award winner Joe Lovano returns home for his Birthday Celebration to present his program entitled Reflections & Projections. The performance on Fri 12/28 will feature an all-star lineup of musicians including Anthony Fuoco, Aidan Plank, Carmen Castaldi, Judi Silvano, Jamey Haddad and Anthony Lovano performing Joe’s original compositions as well as honoring Cleveland greats such as Albert Ayler and Tadd Dameron. On Sat 12/29 the show is billed as a “Homegrown All Star Session” and will feature Eddie Baccus, Greg Bandy, Ernie Krivda, Kenny Davis, Dave Morgan, Ronzo Hudson Smith, Bob Ferrazza and more!

Both nights, Joe Lovano will be recording live at the BOP STOP for Jazz Night In America, the nationally syndicated radio program produced by WBGO, Jazz at Lincoln Center and NPR Music! BOP STOP is one of the first venues outside of New York to be featured on this program. Secure your tickets now for the Fri 12/28 and Sat 12/29 shows, as these special nights are sure to sell out.

For the past 15 years, CityMusic has brought free classical concerts to neighborhoods all over NE Ohio. It opens the season with an all-Brahms program, featuring violinist Tessa Lark in the Concerto for Violin and Cello. Wed 10/24-Sun 10/28.

VIDEO: Hildur Asgeirsdottir Jonsson at Tibor de Nagy Gallery in NYC

The last time we checked in with fiber Hildur Asgeirsdottir Jonsson was years ago at the William Busta Gallery in Cleveland. Since that time, Jonsson has gained worldwide accolades and now regularly exhibits in Rejkyavik, Cleveland and New York, where we caught up with her at her one-person show at Tibor de Nagy Gallery in the East Village.

Employing a 10-foot wide loom, Jonsson weaves massive 15′ tall fiber hangings after first applying paint on the silk. These overwhelming images of recognizable waterfalls in Iceland appear slightly feathered and out of focus, wavering between realistic landscape depiction and ethereal abstract visions. The show is on display through 11/25.

Cleveland Heights’ Cedar-Fairmount District hosts an early Halloween fall festival with cupcake decorating at Luna Bakery, pumpkin decorating, trick or treating at local merchants and an appearance by Whipples the Balloon Clown.

What if all the black people vanished? That’s the question posed by Douglas Turner Ward’s 1965 play Day of Absence. Karamu’s theater has revived and revised the play, suggesting its relevance for contemporary audiences. Through Sun 11/18.

When Baldwin Wallace music theatre alum Kyle Jean-Baptiste accidentally fell to his death from a NYC fire escape at the age of 21 three years ago, it cut off a promising career (he’d just finished a run in Les Miserables on Broadway) and left fellow students reeling. They host a benefit performance for his foundation tonight at Nighttown.
