Thu 12/1 @ 5:30PM

There aren’t too many, if any other, chef/culinary experts with the unusual mix of interests that Michael Twitty has. Twitty, who is African-American, grew up in the Washington D.C. area and developed an early interest in Judaism and Jewish food, eventually converting as an adult. But he also has a strong interest in the contributions of slavery to the cuisine to the American south. And in both areas, he explores the cultural/social/political ramfications of food choices.

When he appears at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, he’ll be addressing the issue of culinary justice, described as “the idea that historically oppressed peoples have a right to authority, sovereignty, prosperity and acknowledgment for their contribution to national and global foodways.” He’ll look at how food can connect people and “be used for good.”

The evening starts with a reception at 5:30; the lecture is at 7pm. It’s $12 for the general public; $10 for museum members, $6 for teachers and students. Register here
