Rickie Lee Jones broke through in a big way with the 1979 track “Chuck E.’s in Love” from her self-titled debut album. Her jazzy boho style, noir-ish lyrics, weathered voice and cool, offhand delivery had some calling her a “female Tom Waits.”
Instantly huge as real artists could be back then, and tapped for major stardom by all the tastemakers, she never ascending to that pinnacle again. But, as artists with real originality and a distinctive vision tend to, she’s kept at it, with 15 albums to her credit now.
Her latest album The Other Side of Desire came out last summer, influenced by the motley musical culture of New Orleans where she now lives. She then hit the road, with a stop at the Kent Stage last August. Didn’t catch her then? She’s back there once again. Tickets are $40-$50/
