Dick Dale was dubbed “King of the Surf Guitar” years before anyone out here in the middle of the country had even heard of any such thing. Even before the Beach Boys made surfing an aspirational activity for teens everywhere, the Southern California was putting out his sinuous instrumentals with their vaguely middle eastern feel (thanks to his Lebanese background) that were blasted on transistor radios on beaches up and down the California coast. Those tunes launched a brief craze for surf-rock instrumentals in the early-mid ’60s. And unlike Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson, Dale actually loved to hit the beaches.
Dale’s nearly 80 and he’s still touring to pay his bills. He’ll be back at the Grog Shop where he performed about this time last year. Cleveland alt-country band Texas Plant opens. Tickets are $30.
