We’ve always had the DIY aesthetic. If our town’s had any success lately, it’s because we yanked on our bootstraps so hard, something had to give. So we tip our porkpie hat to those artists, entrepreneurs, makers, instigators and punk provocateurs who are making it happen.Jamey Haddad prefers jazz, so he’s inciting his group Under One Sun for a 3-night stomp at the BOP STOP. Handmade self-printed indie comix and artist books are making some noise at the Bound Art Book + Zine Fair at MOCA. Iggy Pop & the Dead Kennedys will serenade Shel Greenberg’s Wild FreedOm Punk Yoga classes. Trombonist Chris Anderson is shaking things up with the Rubber City Jazz & Blues Festival.
You’ll find our kind of rogue free agents at the E. 185th Street Makers Market. You might want to attend a benefit for the Refugee Empowerment Agriculture Program, which trains farmers who had to flee. You might find the Pagan Pride festival in Bedford to your liking. You might be enlightened to read Mansfield’s take on our criminal injustice system, or our guest commentary on why no other public square has buses bisecting it. Shel Greenberg Erba is an experienced yoga practitioner and teacher. She’s also a rock music lover with a penchant for punk (as well as other genres) who saw a connection between the two seemingly disparate things.

Master percussionist Jamey Haddad is NEO treasure. A Cleveland native, he teaches at Oberlin College between gigs with superstars like Paul Simon and Sting. But his heart is in jazz and world music, and his group Under One Sun is setting up for a rare 3-night gig at BOP STOP on Aug 26, 27 & 28.
When Jamey heard that the BOP STOP was in need of a decent piano, he pulled some strings and the day we arrived, a restored 7-foot Steinway B was being delivered on a permanent loan from Oberlin College. The gifts keep coming.
There’s a whole underground world of publishing, with works you’ll never find at Barnes & Noble – indie comics, zines and artist books with ideas and formats too experimental and offbeat for the mainstream.
This weekend, MOCACleveland opens the doors to these writers & artists with its Bound Art Book + Zine Fair with lectures, panel discussions, music and a chance to check out (and buy) work by some of these creators. Local author Claudia Taller tells us what it’s all about. Fri 8/26-Sat 8/27.

With so many jazz education programs in northeast Ohio, the area is teeming with talented professors and students. Trombonist Chris Anderson runs the nonprofit Open Tone Music program, and he’s the force behind the new Rubber City Jazz & Blues Festival this weekend.
The inaugural event features 15 jazz and blues artists at three venues in Akron’s Historic Arts District. But Anderson is hoping to grow it into a week-long event with more venues and a strong education component. He shares with CoolCleveland’s John Benson what he has in mind. Fri 8/26-Sat 8/27.

But the game, a sort of variation on bowling and pool, attracts hundreds of participants from all over the region for the annual Bocce Challenge Cup at the Wickliffe Italian American Club for competition, food, drink and entertainment.
But it DOES attract non-Italian participants, according to its media director Larry Koval. And it’s not just old geezers either. Last year’s winners were in their 20s. Fri 8/26-Sun 8/28.

The REAP program at Ohio City Farm trains refugees who were farmers back home how to adapt to growing in Cleveland’s climate. A benefit dinner under the stars at the farm supports their work. Sat 8/27.

Mark Mathews started his bow tie business with a $25 used sewing machine off Craigslist. Now he’s set up the Whatknot Bow Tie Company in the Fifth Street Arcades in the heart of Cleveland’s business district, where lots of men wear suits and ties.
And not just bow ties. Mathews also carries boutonnieres, pocket squares, belts, socks, cuff links and what not.

The newly redesigned Public Square has earned a lot of oohs and aahs, with its new plan that features two sectors instead of four, bisected by the Superior Avenue bus pass-through.
