It’s hard to believe it’s more than ten years that Roberto Ocasio has been gone. Although the local musician/educator died in an auto accident on an icy January day in 2004, he’s left a big legacy to the area music scene. That’s thanks in large part to the Roberto Ocasio Foundation, founded by his family and friends.
Its signature event is the annual Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Camp, now going into its tenth year. It exposes kids in grades 8-12 of all ability levels to the music Ocasio loved. This year it’s taking place at Case Western Reserve University from 6/22-28.
The camp’s mainstay has been Ocasio’s Berklee School of Music classmate, New York-based, Grammy-nominated percussionist/composer Bobby Sanabria (pictured), who serves as its artistic director and artist in residence.
Sanabria will be directing the camp’s young musicians in its finale event: a public concert at the Breen Center for the Performing Arts in Ohio City — not far from Cleveland’s Puerto Rican neighborhood where Ocasio was revered.
It’s free and open to all.
