Fans of Brazilian music have a feast coming their way.
Brazilian jazz ensemble Mozik has booked a three-night stand at Nighttown. And on the third night — Saturday — they’ll be joined by singer Kenia who has established herself in the genre over more than three decades, cross-pollinating Brazilian music with influences of jazz singers like Carmen McRae and Sarah Vaughan.
Although the two founding members of Mozik are both from Sao Paulo, neither had a youthful interest in their native music, preferring rock, blues, funk, jazz and classical music.
Drummer Marucio Zottarelli and pianist Gilson Schachnik connected at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Although they have had their fingers in a lot of musical pies — Schachnik teaches at Berklee, Zottarelli is a New York-based session and touring drummer — they apparently became homesick for the sounds of Brazil.
That eventually found an outlet in Mozik, which put out a self-titled CD a year and a half ago, which feature a colorful profusion of South American rhythms and melodies reshaped by the stellar musicianship of the players.
The quintet also includes flutist Yulia Musayelyan, bassist Fernando Huergo and guitarist Gustavo Assis-Brasil.
Tickets are $20.
