Malley’s Chocolate’s is a Cleveland institution, founded in 1935 with a single shop in Lakewood. That shop, a combination confectionary and ice cream parlor, is itself an institution where generations of kids have had birthday parties. But now Malley’s has 21 sweets shops in northeast Ohio, another three of them also adjoining a pastel-decorated ice cream parlor/soda fountain. And every Clevelander has seen the oval “CHOC” stickers on the bumpers of drivers who hope to be spotted and given a gift certificate for Malley’s treats.
Those treats include candies of all sorts, both milk and dark chocolate covering nuts, caramels, nougats, and candied fruit, and in a variety of shapes. Malley’s is particularly noted for its seasonal and specialty chocolates, like its peanut butter & chocolate buckeyes honoring Ohio’s state tree, and for the custom-made chocolates they create for special occasions. All chocolates are made in Malley’s factory off Brookpark, whose pink towers with the words “cocoa,” “milk,” and “sugar” are visible from I-480.
