A Unique Way to Get in the Holiday Spirit @ Medina’s Historic Square

By Julie Cajigas

Getting in the spirit of the season is often something that happens slowly for me. In fact, for the most part, seeing Christmas decorations in October is more of an annoyance than a joy. But, as the wind turns colder, the days grow shorter and Thanksgiving grows nearer, I’m ready to be of good cheer. This year I’ve found a new way to be inspired. With 5,000 candles lighting up the chilly late-fall air and a parade of lights, the 27th Annual Candlelight Walk in Historic Medina Square sounds like just the ticket. To learn more about this exciting event, I visited Root Candles and interviewed retail director Heather DeRosha. What I found was a whole lot of seasonal splendor.

Find your seasonal spirit during the festivities from Fri 11/18 – Sun 11/20 in Medina’s Historic Square at 5 Public Square, Medina 44256. The events begin at 4PM on Fri 11/18 with the opening of holiday shopping at local shops, and continues with the lighting of the luminaries at 4:30PM Fri evening where visitors can enjoy the Prince of Peace Choir and the lighting of the community Christmas Tree with Medina Mayor Dennis Hanwell. On Sat 11/19, enjoy holiday shopping, an ice carving demonstration, the Holiday Parade of Lights and Santa Claus’ entrance. Also beginning on Saturday are carriage rides, trolley rides, and much, much more. To learn about all of the Candlelight walk events, visit the official event calendar on the Main Street Medina Website.

The A.I. Root Company, which you might know as Root Candles, is the event’s platinum sponsor and one of Medina’s oldest and best-loved businesses. Donating over 5,000 candles, which will line the streets, they are a major part of the 27th Annual Candlelight Walk. Root Candles is a fun place to explore when preparing your home for the holidays. In addition to many, many varieties of candles and candle accessories, the main retail location in Medina offers everything from themed holiday decorations of every possible variety (see the shoe tree and bird tree if you visit), unique gifts including gourmet treats, and cooking classes to help you prepare your annual holiday feast. Other event partners include Summa Health System and World Truck Towing.

Whether you want to get started on holiday shopping, get into the spirit or simply enjoy a night filled with 5,000 beautiful, glowing candles, we hope to see you at the 27th Candelight Walk. See you there!

The 27th Annual Candlelight Walk is Fri 11/18 – Sun 11/20 in Medina’s Historic Square. To learn more about the square and other upcoming events, visit Main Street Medina on the web.
