Tue 10/15-Sun 10/20
This week the BOP STOP is celebrating a milestone: the tenth anniversary of the previous owners of the BOP STOP, who built it to showcase jazz, donating the venue to the nonprofit Music Settlement. In that time, its programing has been expanded to encompass all types of music including blues, reggae, classical, gospel and soul, as well as jazz, comedy, film, special events and student showcases.
One of its regular events, in addition to its monthly jazz jams and Brent Kirby’s twice monthly 10 x 3 songwriter showcases, is Outlab: Experiments in Improvised Music, where musicians of all types are invited to bring an instrument or “sound making device” to engage in a group improvisational jam to explore what might emerge from such an open-ended session.
Outlab kicks off the BOP STOP’s tenth anniversary week, which it will celebrate through Sunday October 20. The 10 x 3 showcase happens on Wednesday October 16. Thursday October 17 John Fedchock with perform at centennial tribute to legendary jazz trombonist J.J. Johnson (1924-2001). Friday October 18 features two big events. At 7:30 smooth jazz ensemble Hubb’s Groove will offer a tribute to the horn-playing Brecker Brothers, Randy and Michael. (Randy was an original member of Blood Sweat and Tears, and both played with artists such as Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones, Eric Clapton and Frank Zappa.) That concert is followed at 10pm with the tenth anniversary jazz jam session.
On Saturday October 19, the BOP STOP will present something new: the BOP STOP big band premiering new works. Organized by BOP STOP director Bryan Kennard, the ensemble’s debut performance will include ten new works by local composers and ones with a connection to the area: Aidan Plank, Brad Wagner, Dave Morgan, Stephen Phillip Harvey, Emma Donkin, Shanyse Strickland, Sam Blakeslee, Garrett Folger, Bobby Selvaggio, and Chas Baker.
On Sunday, October 20th multi-instrumentalist Nate Wood’s band fOUR will close the anniversary week. Go here for more information and tickets.
