Most of the music brunches at the Music Box Supper Club feature tribute bands of various types. But occasionally they’ll throw in a special artist. That’s the case this week when harmonica player Wallace Coleman leads his band for a blues brunch.
Like many of his generation, and like his eventual bandleader Robert Lockwood Jr. he came up north during the tail end of the Great Migration, moving from Tennessee to Cleveland in the 50s, and becoming part of the local blues community. With an active scene and touring circuit, Coleman absorbed diverse blues styles including traditional Delta blues and electrified Chicago blues. After retiring from Hough Bakeries at age 51, Coleman joined Lockwood’s band fulltime, the only Harmonica player to perform with him.
After ten years, Coleman left Lockwood’s band (with his encouragement) to form his own ensemble in 1997. Since then he’s toured the world, played at major blues festivals in Europe and the U.S., released several albums and remained a beloved part of the area blues scene.
You can probably do the math and realize this trooper in now in his mid-late 80s, which means you probably only have another 20 years or so to catch him! He’ll be performing at the Music Box with an all-star lineup of experienced local musicians: guitarists Mike Modlin and John Lucic, bassist Steve Hudock, drummer Greg Martin and pianist Bob Corlett.
Admission to the show is nominal; brunch is extra. You need to make a reservation regardless. Go here.
