Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has gained exceptional celebrity for a classical musician in large part by going places most classical musicians don’t go. He’s embraced genres and collaborations that fall well outside your traditional concert hall.
His best-known such project is his Silk Road Ensemble, which he formed in 1998 to explore using instruments from around the world to mingle music from different global cultures. It’s not a set group; dozens of musicians have passed through the ensemble, representing a score of countries, and it’s drawn on music from a few dozen contemporary composers, as well as new arrangements of existing works.
The group is on tour again in support of its new album, Sing Me Home. It will be at Blossom Music Center where it will perform music with roots in Mali, Ireland, Finland, Syria, Spain, Japan, India, American jazz and classical music.
Tickets are $39-$120.
