Concert Recalls Legacy of Cleveland Latin Jazz Musician the Late Roberto Ocasio

Bobby Sanabria

Wed 7/21 @ 7PM

In January 2004, Cleveland jazz musician/band leader/educator Roberto Ocasio died in an auto accident on an icy day, leaving the Cleveland music community and the local Puerto Rican community bereft. His influence is still felt though, thanks to the family and friends who founded the Roberto Ocasio Foundation to continue his work of inspiring young jazz musicians.

One of the key components of that is the annual Latin Jazz summer camp, which normally would be taking place about now. But things aren’t quite normal yet and the camp isn’t taking place for the second year. However, the organization is presenting a concert at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium.

Its music director is New York-based percussionist Bobby Sanabria, who was a classmate of Ocasio’s at Berklee College of Music in Boston and has served as the camp’s artist director and artist in residence. He’ll be joined by special guest, vocalist Janis Siegel of Manhattan Transfer, along with a band of stand-out Cleveland jazz musicians: pianist Jackie Warren,  Cleveland Jazz Orchestra artistic director trombonist Paul Ferguson, bassist Kip Reed, and trumpet player Scott McKee.

The concert is free, with opening seating. It will also be streamed.
