Paraguayan classical guitarist Berta Rojas was scheduled to make her Cleveland debut in 2020 but … things … happened. Well, she’s going to be here in Cleveland now, performing live! in person! At Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights as part of the Cleveland Classic Guitar Society’s International Series.
The 55-year-old guitarist has established a name for herself in a classical guitar world dominated by men (although less so each year.) She’s performed around the world, been nominated for three Latin Grammys and released numerous albums, not all of them strictly classical: one was 2015’s History of Tango. She’s also dedicated to exposing Latin America music, both from Paraguay and other countries. She’s also created a classical guitar competition and served as artistic director of the Ibero-American Guitar Festival. She’s also an associate professor at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston. And when she’s in Cleveland, she’ll continue some of that outreach, visiting a couple of Cleveland schools where she’ll play, offer some instruction and talk with the kids.
Her concert will include music by Ida Presti, John Duarte, Gilbert Biberian, Federico Moreno Torroba, Maria Luisa Anido and Sergio Assad.
