Seventeenth-century composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber was also a virtuoso violinist, which led him to compose pieces of daunting difficulty for subsequent masters of that instrument. His Rosary sonatas, also called the Mystery Sonatas, featuring 15 short pieces, including the passacaglia violin solo that concludes it.

When Cleveland’s baroque orchestra Apollo’s Fire performs the piece as “Sacred Mysteries” in four concerts this week, its assistant artistic director and concertmaster Alan Choo will be leading the musicians as soloist in the piece. The Thursday and Friday night concerts also include an afterglow party where concertgoers can help Choo celebrate the release of his new solo album, get it signed and enjoy a few bites. Make a full evening of it and come early: Case Western Reserve University Professor of Music Susan McClary will give a pre-concert talk an hour before each of the four performances.

The ensemble performs at West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church in Rocky River on Thursday February 15; at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights on Friday February 16 and Saturday February 17; and at First United Methodist Church in Akron on Monday February 19. Get tickets here.
