Cleveland’s premiere baroque ensemble Apollo’s Fire launches its season with a crowd-pleasing program called “Splendor in London” that includes George Frideric Handel’s familiar Water Music, as well as other choral works similarly inspired by British royal pageants: Henry Purcell’s Funeral Music for Queen Mary and selections from King Arthur and Handel’s Zadok the Priest. It will be a rare opportunity to hear Water Music played on period instruments, including baroque flute, natural horn, baroque trumpet and lute. The Apollo’s Singers and soloist will also join the orchestra for these performances.
“It will be so much fun to bring the Water Music back to Apollo’s Fire, after an absence of 16 years,” says Apollo’s Fire founder/artistic director Jeannette Sorrell. “In the last 5 years, I’ve been conducting this piece with so many different orchestras — from Spain to Seattle — and I’ve worked on shaping these dances into a larger, compelling musical arc. But our amazing Apollo’s Fire musicians will certainly add an extra layer of sparkle.”
They’ll be at Akron’s St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Thursday October 12; at Lakewood United Methodist on Friday October 1; at Federated Church in Chagrin Falls on Saturday October 1; and at Church of the Gesu in University Heights on Sunday October 15.
