Dancer/choreography Alonzo King founded his Alonzo King LINES Ballet in San Francisco in 1982 with a belief in stirring creativity both in the professional company and in the classes the company offers, drawing on classical ballet as well as other dance forms, contemporary musicians and visual artists to create works that are stunning on multiple levels, “exploring what unites us as human beings: empathy, joy, and the ability to transcend.”
The company is bringing its work Deep River to Playhouse Square’s Mimi Ohio Theatre this weekend. That piece features a score by jazz pianist/composer Jason Moran and vocals by Lisa Fischer that emerge from the tradition of Black spirituals, fiving a depth and poignancy to the movement onstage
The Playhouse Square performances include a pre-show talk and a moderated Q&A with the dancers after the performance. Get tickets here.
