English/Spanish “Dramedy” Has Its World Premiere at Cleveland Public Theatre

Thu 2/8-Sat 2/24

Cleveland Public Theatre is known for programs other theaters in this area are tackling with the same dedication and long history. One of those is supporting theater pieces at all stages of development, from first readings to full productions, through initiatives such as its Test Flight series. The other is presenting works representing a full spectrum of ethnicities, identities and life experiences.

Its upcoming production Alter, written by Peruvian-born Cleveland playwright/performer Tania Benites, a familiar figure at CPT and other area theaters, exemplifies CPT’s mission. The work was first performed as part of Test Flight 2023 and was a hit with audiences there. Now it’s getting a fully developed, world premiere production in the James Levin Theatre by Teatro Público de Cleveland, CPT’s Hispanic wing.

It’s described as a “horror/thriller-flavored workplace dramedy” whose plot involves a customer service rep named Maria using a self-help book titled Hypnosis for Self Confidence to climb the corporate ladder. “However, she soon discovers that the best version of herself may be her worst enemy,” says the synopsis.

The play, directed by Kari Barclay, is in English with Spanish supertitles. It runs Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday @ 7pm and Sundays February 11 & 18 @ 3pm. Opening night includes a post-show party with the cast and crew. All tickets are “pay what you choose.” Go here to get them.
