The Cleveland Pride Band was founded back in 2003 and became regulars at LGBTQ+ events such as Pride under the name the Blazing River Freedom Band which it adopted in 2007. The all-volunteer group, made up of LGBTQ+ musicians their allies, has had a post-pandemic growth spurt, with new musicians, higher profile venues and the new name it adopted last year. Don’t expect professional-level chops — that’s not the deal here. It’s about enthusiasm, inclusivity and community spirit. Their concerts are aiming to offer a fun evening for all.
That’s what they’ll be doing when they bring their first show of 2024, Rock Through the Ages, to the Maltz performing Arts Center in University Circle, which will demonstrates how this ensemble’s ambitious is growing. Their definition of “rock” is pretty expansive as they’re promising “80 year of popular music” with tunes by the Beatles, Elvis, the Rolling Stones, the Backstreet Boy, Journey and more. They’ll also be introducing an offshoot, the Cleveland Pride Jazz Band, and bringing some visual components in the form of a multi-media installation by artists Megan Young. But it’s still all about the community spirit: they’ll be urging you to sing along!
