Cleveland Public Theatre’s Test Flight series in part of its mission to nurture new work. The works presented are “in development,” that is, not at the stage of a full production and still seeking feedback to flesh out what the playwright is working on. It’s not unusual to see pieces that began in the Test Flight program later appear on CPT’s regular schedule as fully staged works.
Test Flight kicks off this week with Eyes of the Bridge: Love Never Dies, written and produced by Jeanne Madison who was CPT’s 2021-2022 Nord Family Foundation Playwright Fellow. The actress/writer has had plays previously produced at CPT and Karamu.
The synopsis of her new work says, “What happens when Black love collides with White lust at the turn of the 20th century in the old south? Forty years later, when Luda Mae gets a mysterious summons, she sees a chance for the reckoning. Will she act? Or will the Jim Crow status quo prevail?”
Another local playwright, Michael Oatman, directs this show; his own “It Happened in Atlanta” is currently onstage at Karamu.
Eyes of. The Bridge will be performed at 7pm Thursday March 7-Saturday March 9. The Test Flight series runs through March 31, with a different play each weekend.
