Thu 9/8-Sat 9/10
The Rubber City Jazz & Blues Festival is back with three nights of programming taking place at Blu Jazz+ in downtown Akron.
Start on Thursday @ 7pm with Tommy Lehman’s Squadtet kicking things off, followed by what’s described as a “more-than-hip jam session” led by alto sax player Ronell Regis.
Friday night’s performance features a quartet led by rising guitar star Dan Wilson at 7:30PM and a sure-to-be-rousing performance by the high-energy jazz/fun/R&B ensemble Nathan-Paul & the Admirables at 9:30.
Finally, on Saturday, sax player Chris Coles’ Gleam takes the stage at 7pm, followed by drummer/composer Jonathan Barber and his group Vision Ahead, who play classic jazz infused with rock, soul and gospel at 8:30pm & Sun Shade and the Tropikal Vybz Band playing reggae and dancehall at 10pm.

In addition on Friday September 9 at 8pm there’s an outdoor screening of Miles Ahead, the Miles Davis bio film featuring Don Cheedle, with Northeast Ohio jazz keyboard player Theron Brown in the role of Herbie Hanock. Brown will introduce the film. It takes place at Outside the Box in True North Akron at 110 North Main Street. Bring blankets, chairs and snacks; the screening is free.
