One of the often underrated assets of Northeast Ohio is our access to world-class classical music for a reasonable price, like free. Sure, you can complain that some (but not most) Cleveland Orchestra tickets can top out over $100. But our conservatories and university music departments showcase some of the nation’s most gifted students and faculty members on par with the best orchestra players in an endless stream of concerts.
One such concert takes place tonight at Oberlin’s Finney Chapel, where the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra, featuring students of one of the best music schools in the country, will perform, with Raphael Jimenez conducting. They’ll perform Igor Stravinsky’s Suite No. 2 for small orchestra and Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major, followed after intermission by Aaron Copland’s Suite from Appalachian Spring.
The soloist in the concert is Haewon Song, who has been on the faculty at the Oberlin Conservatory for 25 years, while performing around the world with orchestras, as a duo with her pianist husband Robert Shannon, also an Oberlin faculty member, and as a member of the Oberlin trio.
How much will tickets set you back? Oh yeah — they’re free. And it’s open to the public.
