The upcoming summer Akron ArtWalk will be an especially busy one, so hope for good weather to walk between all the organizations hosting events. This edition of the quarterly event is called “Literary Echoes,” in honor of the 150thanniversary of the Akron-Summit County Public Library.
Summit Artspace, which was home of the library from 1940-1969 and now hosts artist studios and galleries, will be offering a final look at its spring shows, including the Artists of Summit County juried show, Sylvia Sykes The Aunties, and Happiness and the End of the World by Matt Miller. The building’s more than two dozen resident artists will have their studios open to the public, and there’ll also be 30 pop-up artists, both visual and literary, hands-on art activities, and live music by the Supertonics Flute Ensemble.
Just a few blocks away in the Akron Art Museum parking lot, you’ll find the Akron-Summit Library’s bookmobile with books you can actually check out, a spoken word open mic, a poetry chalking activity, an art book sale, food vendors and more. You can also join an Akron on Foot walking tour of the library’s former locations
Other nearby organizations hosting activities include Akron Soul Train which will be open from 11am-9pm to see its current exhibitions, with a short-form theater performance by Sara Showman at 6:30pm; Curated Storefronts The Groundhog Show at TrueNorth Akron around the shipping containers. Nightlight Cinema will be presenting the documentary film Orlando, My Political Biography, at the Courtyard by Marriott, and there’ll be DJ and drag performances as well.
Look for activities, including performances and art shows, at the Green Dragon Inn, Jilly’s Music Room, and other venues and galleries around the Historic Arts District and Northside neighborhoods as well. Everything is free; go here for complete information.
