Author Thrity Umrigar was born in Bombay, India, where she grew up immersed in American fiction. She emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 21 and is now well ensconced in Cleveland as a professor of English at Case Western Reserve University since 2002. She began writing novels after a career in journalism, publishing her first, Bombay Time, in 1999.

Her ten novels — her newest is The Museum of Failures — have largely dealt with different aspects of clashing cultures and how her characters have addressed those conflicting demands. (She’s also written a memoir and three children’s books.) Most of have been bestsellers that have received wide attention and awards. The Museum of Failures was named Amazon’s Best Book of the Month.

Umrigar will be speaking in person at the Hudson Library and Historical Society. Copies of The Museum of Failures will be available for purchase and signing through Hudson’s Learned Owl Book Shop. The program is free, but registration is required. Go here.
