Fang Man (call her Mandy) was born in Southern China’s Canton region and studied at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing before moving on to Cornell, the Pompidou Center in Paris and last month began her new role as Composer-In-Residence at Baldwin-Wallace College.

When Terrence Spivey took the job of Artistic Director at Karamu House 7 years ago to the day this video was shot, he had already spent 18 years in NYC doing “schlock horror movies and independent films and videos.” This year, he’s put together an amazing season, including their new hot show, “God’s Trombones,” the award-winning, 35-member, gospel-infused musical that he wrote based on James Weldon Johnson’s poems.
Talk with Terrence out front on Quincy & E. 89th Street, as he discusses the venerated history of Karamu House, their educational programs and how the spirit of Karamu at the center of life in the community has changed his life. In early January of 2006, Eric Fingerhut announced that he would be running for governor in the upcoming Democratic primary against Ted Strickland.
When this announcement was made, his long-time rival for the title of Northeast Ohio’s favorite Jewish liberal, Lee Fisher, was raking in the dough heading up a lucrative non-profit, his once promising political career in shambles after back-to-back defeats in state-wide races during the 1990s…

Tom Wiggins is one of the people that keeps the music world rolling along here in Northern Ohio. He is mostly known as the head of the Recording Arts and Technology program at Tri-C, and host of the award-winning cable show Crooked River Groove. Many do not know that Wiggins is also a fine musician and songwriter in his own right, and every so often puts out a quality release. His latest endeavor is A Good Wife, which he is releasing this fall on his own label Chilidog Records. Although a different style than his last few releases, it is another very solid effort.

Legalized gambling is nothing more than a tax on poor people, and I want to restate my personal opposition to it based on philosophical grounds right from the beginning.
Now with that said, the argument that Ohio should allow casino-style gaming made sense on the grounds that people were simply going to bordering states to engage in it, thus taking dollars elsewhere.
So when voters approved casinos, the only logical thing to do was to try to insure that the jobs and revenues produced by gambling are distributed equally and fairly… continued opposition makes little sense…

In 1961, a new orchestra was born in Euclid. The Euclid Symphony Orchestra (ESO) was organized with sixty musicians from Euclid and the surrounding areas.
Now, as we approach 2011, this Euclid institution is celebrating its 50th Anniversary season by welcoming a brand new Music Director, Kevin Eppich, who grew up in Euclid and holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Composition from Cleveland State University.

Cool Cleveland Endorses Ken Lanci for Cuyahoga County Executive I respect Cool Clevelands freedom to endorse a political candidate, but as a reader, I am not a fan of it. I like that Cool Cleveland did mini-video-profiles of each county exec candidate, but my preference would be for this outlet to remain neutral and not to endorse. To me, Cool Cleveland is an arts, culture, and all-things-Cleveland site, not a vehicle for the editor’s opinions. Or am I wrong…?
