Ursuline Gallery Looking for Submissions for Women’s “New Masters” Show

Ursuline College’s Florence O’Donnell Wasmer Gallery has been closed since March, and isn’t scheduled to reopen until November 6, when it will open in its new home in the Monsignor Mullen Building, the college’s main academic and administrative building. That’s when it will launch its exhibition, The New Masters 2: Women Artists of Northeast Ohio, in celebration of its 40th anniversary.

The title refers to the fact that the scions of traditional art aka “The Old Masters,” prior to 1800, were overwhelmingly men, and their concerns and interests were considered the only serious ones. The college presented its first show challenging this received idea in 2018 and is planning to make it a biennial event.

The New Masters will challenge viewers to consider contemporary women’s issues such as race, equity, marriage, motherhood, family, spirituality, rebellion and empowerment,” they propose.

The gallery is currently accepting submission of work through Wednesday September 23 @ 11:59pm. It’s open to women 18 and older, currently living in Ashland, Ashtabula, Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Huron, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Richland, Stark, Summit, Trumbull, Tuscarawas and Wayne counties. Artists may submit up to three works and should register here  to submit. Artists will be notified of acceptance status on Tuesday October 6.

The show will run from Friday November 6-Friday January 29, 2021. It will also be viewable online after November 6; the gallery will also be open by appointment.
