For its next concert, the Akron Symphony pushes its boundaries when it collaborates with New York’s adventurous, contemporary So Percussion ensemble, who are in town under the auspices of Tuesday Musical Association for whom they’re also doing a FUZE concert.
The two groups will be joining forces for a program at EJ Thomas Hall in which So Percussion will use improvised instruments such as twigs, metal pipes and tuned wine bottles to perform in front of a backdrop created by the orchestra on a concerto called “man made” written by composer David Lang for So Percussion.
The concert will close with a more familiar piece — Gustav Holst’s The Planets, for which conductor Christopher Wilkins and the orchestra will be joined by the Women of the Akron Symphony Chorus. The program also includes “Secret of Wind and Birds” by Tan Dun, which features bird songs activated by audience members’ cell phones (yes, you CAN turn them back on for this one!), and “The Wasps” by Ralph Vaughn Williams.
Concertgoers will want to come early. At 7pm Wilkins and Lang will be doing a “Preview from the Podium,” where they’ll talk about the creation of “man made.” Tickets are $20-$55.
