For more than three decades, Cleveland’s Drumplay has been performing its distinctive brand of world music/jazz/spoken word for a quarter century now. Prior to his death in 2004, the ensemble include Cuyahoga County Poet Laureate Daniel Thompson, whose work combined a highly educated sensibility with that of a street poet and who was known for the work he did in the homeless community. Over the years, they’ve released almost a dozen albums showcasing their jazz-leaning sound with Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Middle Eastern influences.
Led by founder/percussionist James Onysko, Drumplay is paying tribute to Thompson and his work for the homeless with a benefit show for the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (NEOCH), taking place at the new Treelawn Social Club in the Waterloo Arts District (formerly the Slovenian Workman’s Home)
