Guitar Duo Blends Classical and Brazilian Music

Sat 3/11 @ 7:30PM

Classical guitar has deep roots in Latin music so it’s no surprise that the two forms of music meet and mingle constantly. The Brasil Guitar Duo — João Luiz and Douglas Lora — met as teenager guitar students in São Paulo. Since then they’ve performed both classical works by composers such as Domenico Scalatti, J.S. Bach and Claude Debussy, and music infused with the sounds of their native Brazil (choro, samba, maxixe, baião), including pieces composed by Lora as well as Brazilian and classical pieces arranged by Luiz, to expand the repertoire for two guitar.

They’ll be performing at Shaker Heights’ Plymouth Church as guests of the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society. Their program features mostly works by living contemporary composers, as well as several 20th-century composers including Astor Piazzolla.
