Blues singers and old folks call it “graveyard love,” but it really isn’t “love” at all. It’s about the extent one person will go to in order to exert control over another in a relationship. It’s also about that point in a soured relationship when mental coercion and domestic violence no longer works… and the situation turns deadly. I know, I was almost at that point of no return in a relationship close to 40 years ago.Most marriages break up over money, but ours was different. After getting married to Christine at age 17 (I used to joke that while I was 17, she was actually 17 going on 40) due to her being six months pregnant, we assumed the role of adults. At age 18, I left my parents house with a wife and daughter — a son would be born almost two years later — and we became, by all outward appearances, a successful, happy family.
I’d gotten a decent job at the electric power company and my wife finished high school and became a registered nurse who worked in operating rooms. Virtually everyone who worked with her said that she was so good at her profession that she should go back to school and become a doctor. Merely in our early 20s, life was so good that we were contemplating building a summer home.
However, there was one fly in the ointment…

Former Clevelander Ryan Lott, a.k.a. Son Lux (pictured here) earns nod in NPR’s All Songs Considered as Best New Artist of the Year. Click here for more details. A couple short years ago, Lott won an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship, became a Cleveland Arts Prize Emerging Artist Award Recipient and was gigging with a local DJ as 2% Milk. Lott’s works have been featured everywhere from SPACES to the Guggenheim Museum in New York; the current NYC transplant’s album At War with Walls and Mazes is turning heads with its Imogen Heap/ Portishead vibe. Released in March 2008, At War was deemed “…a flawlessly produced album with an astonishing range of energy and emotion” by NPR. Student Journalists, or potential ones, can meet with Thomas Mulready as the Student Journalism Project (SJP) begins its fourth year this week with the creator of Cool Cleveland as guest speaker. Thomas Mulready, Cool Cleveland founder and publisher, kicks off the SJP’s series of interactive discussions for students 12 – 19 years of age who are considering careers in journalism; each session features a professional in the field and a moderator. The series takes place at Cleveland State University on nine Saturday mornings, from 10:30AM — 12:30PM, in January, February and March. It’s sponsored by the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, and each session includes a brief visit to CYO’s rehearsal to see what goes on behind the scenes there, followed by a brief discussion of various ways journalists might write about it.
In a typical session, the professional journalist tells the story of how he or she got into his or her field of journalism and describes the job and its requirements, followed by questions from the students. I’ll be moderating each session…

Hosted by Michael DeAloia of FIT Technologies, who formerly served as Tech Czar for the City of Cleveland, the site exhibits his passion for all things interesting in the history of our sweet city, including some remarkable shots he recently posted of renderings of Cleveland’s City Hall prior to it’s current magnificent structure where DeAloia once worked for two mayors, as well as an 1895 Beaux Arts design to build a “jaw-dropping” civic structure on Public Square (pictured), with street car stop right inside the building. McClelland & Henson Opening on Fri 1/9 from 5:30 – 8PM, the Sculpture Center features Accumulations Retraced Recent Work by Susan McClelland in their Main Gallery and In Fluid Space Sculpture by Don Henson, in the Euclid Ave Gallery. The two artists are Kent State School of Art grads and work in markedly divergent materials to form sculptural objects. McClelland creates soft, bulky sculptures of hand stitched and felted fabrics formed over furniture or wire supports that refer to history of use, community, and family ties. Henson makes exquisitely crafted and machined, hard edged, and menacing wood and aluminum sculptures that appear to be newly created hybrid life forms with a sci-fi quality. Andrew Skurka: Out for a Very Long Walk The accomplished, 27-year old professional backpacker is best known for two monumental long-distance hiking firsts: the 6,875 mile Great Western Loop and the 7,778 mile Sea-to-Sea Route. The Great Western Loop links five long distance hiking trails, 12 national parks, and over 75 wilderness areas; the Sea-to-Sea Route is a transcontinental network from Quebec to Washington. Brazilian pianist/vocalist Eliane Elias has been a major presence on the jazz and world music scene for the past 30 years. She first came to the attention of American audiences as a member of the classic 80’s jazz super group Steps Ahead which also featured Michael Brecker, Mike Manieri, Eddie Gomez, and Peter Erskine. Since that time she has recorded over 20 solo CD’s including a duo project with Herbie Hancock. Currently she has just released Bossa Nova Stories on Blue Note records which commemorates the 50th anniversary of Bossa Nova music. It always comes as a shock to music lovers to realize that church musicians (who so obviously love music!) seldom attend concerts. But, after all — when could they go? If they’re not actively producing the music themselves, they’re busy rehearsing or planning or securing other musicians for collaborations or solo events. And that’s the reasoning behind the launch of a a new website called ClevelandClassical.com, which offers a few features each week, but really stands as a calendar of upcoming classical musical events in the area. So far, it’s mostly been a just this week and next week endeavor, but plans are to expand for 3-4 weeks in advance and possibly even farther ahead than that in the coming months.
ClevelandClassical.com is the brainchild of Daniel Hathaway, who was, for a bit more than thirty years, the Director of Music and Arts at Trinity Cathedral. He retired in June, then spent the month of July doing mostly nothing. August was spent in writing, or organizing his thoughts regarding the several books he has in his mind — mostly how-tos for event planners and musicians…

With author credits to some 18 books on the city, Jim Toman doesn’t really ever play the boosterism card in any of his works; rather, his angle is more documentarian. Think Ken Burns. Vintage Cleveland is no exception — with his well-researched essays and appropriately matched snapshots of bygone Millionaire’s Row, Euclid Beach and Luna Park, the Doan’s Corner neighborhood and more. The shots of Public Square and streetcars (many of which now inhabit Toronto, Ontario), Detroit-Superior Bridge, Elysium, West Side Market and the Lake Erie Lakefront are all truly something to behold. And let’s be honest here — you’ve never seen a crowd in Cleveland quite like the one you see on Public Square in this book. Quite a treat for families (compare today’s Cleveland with the snapshots here for real wow factor for the kids) Vintage Cleveland is a real feast for the eyes and a bound companion you’re sure to return to over and over again. Former Clevelander Ryan Lott grew up studying diverse compositional and performance styles and that has reflected in everything he’s done — from his multimedia installations at SPACES and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, to his forays into hip-hop turntablism with his last local project, 2% Milk. Lott’s solo piano and exploration of soundscapes as Son Lux were almost a pet project by comparison. But with At War with Walls and Mazes, Lott has wowed no less an authority than NPR’s All Songs Considered and made a number of others’ year-end “Best Of” lists as well. Lott’s engaging blend of hip-hop, resplendent orchestral sounds and minimalist elevator/lounge electronica — complete with disembodied Bowiesque vocals — is nothing short of magical. Think Imogen Heap or Portishead (though not as gloomily sensual) but with a necessary dose of testosterone. Highlights? Hmmmf. How about the whole thing. This is an oeuvre in and of itself with a mindful flow and is meant to be listened to in one sitting. Pour a couple champagne cocktails, visualize yourself at one of the (boutique) W Hotel’s swanky lounges and bliss out to this one… at 2AM… with the lights turned down low. A $30 Million Mistake By Best & Brightest
In the 1990s, Cleveland had a rather highly educated City Council. I can’t remember the number but the percentage of lawyers among the 21 members was high.Cleveland also had an intelligent, crafty and feisty Mayor in Michael White.
Today, City Council appears — with a few exceptions — to be inept and even farcical. Mayor Frank Jackson may be steady but one wouldn’t call him artful or exciting.
Does it make any difference?
