One of the area’s holiday traditions for those that find The Messiah and The Nutcracker not to their tastes is the annual Heavy Metal Food Benefit taking place at the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern.
Organized by Bill Peters, Cleveland’s metal maven and host of the long-running WJCU 88.7FM show Metal on Metal and sponsored by his Auburn Records and the Exchange, the evening starts early and goes late. It features a lineup of 13 local metal bands, old and new, alternating in the ballroom and the tavern so there’s never a down moment.
Performers this year include Chemikill, Destructor, Hell and Back, Larry the Wolf from Manimals, Lotus Pedal, Lower 13, Olathia, Poobah, Terror, Wretch and Metallica tribute the Four Horseman. (All the others are primarily original bands). The metal-influenced burlesque ensemble Red Hot Heathens will also perform. There’s a full scheduled of playing times at the Facebook event page.
Hosting the event and keeping things moving along are Olathia frontwoman Chris Emig, Red Hot Heathens founder Aurora Sans, Playboy pin-up Daniella Dior and special guest Iron Ingo Sthührenberg, a German fan of Cleveland metal who makes regular forays to this array to slake his metal jones.
It’s free. Guests are asked to bring donations for the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and Friends of the Cleveland Kennel.
