The San Francisco area may not strike the average person as a fertile ground for punk rock, but indeed it was, specifically the East Bay area which, starting in the 70s, and until well into the 90s, produced a series of groundbreaking artists from Operation Ivy to Rancid to the scene’s commercial breakout band Green Day.
Fittingly, Green Day executive produced the 2017 film Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk, which they snagged the legendary Iggy Pop to narrate. It tells the story of the scene over 30 years, focusing on the scene that developed around Berkeley’s 924 Gilman Street collective.
The film screens at the Rock Hall as part of its spring film series. It’s $5.50 for non-members. Reserve tickets here.
