Musicians Perform Newly Created Score to Classic 1928 Silent Film

Sat 3/2 @ 8PM

The 1928 French silent film La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc (The Passion of Joan of Arc) directed by Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer, is considered by some to be one of the most important films in cinema history, with a powerful performance in the title role by stage actress Renée Jeanne Falconetti in her only screen role.  And this year the film entered the public domain.

Now the Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project (CUSP) is presenting a live rescoring of the film. “We modernize the sounds of her era with a new conceptual score, blending 15th century French vocal music with new music sounds of vocal improvisation and electronics.” The new score contains fragments of work by 15th-century composers Guillaume DuFay, Gilles Binchois, Johannes Reson and Francesco de Salinas incorporated into a new work, performed by vocalists Melanie Emig, Noami Columna and Rowan Taymuree, and Stephan Haluska on electronics in a multimedia performance at Convivium 33 in AsiaTown.
