MorrisonDance founder and artistic director Sarah Morrison, Chuck Karnack of All-Go-Sign, and stage scenic/lighting Trad Burns have been active members of northeast Ohio’s creative community for decades.
Now the trio has joined forces to get performers — dancers, actors and musicians — back to doing what they do best: performing for a live audience. And they’ll be bringing back to area arts lovers one of the things they love about Cleveland summers: the opportunity to experience outdoor performances in different spaces.
They’re using a model borrowed from a Seattle dance company that also has elements of a longtime MorrisonDance program called The City Is Our Playground to present The City Is Our Stage. Audiences will drive around town to take in mini-performances stages on lawns, driveways, porches and balconies.
The event will take place the weekend of August 15-16, with an encore for the weekend of August 22-23 possible if ticket sales (which will start in July) warrant it. Audience members will get a map of 5-10 locations where they will see a 5-10 minute performance.
Right now, they are looking for a diverse group of artists to participate and they’ve just put out a request for performers
“With so few events right now in town, we are afraid that the standard posting locations will not be enough to catch the attention of the fantastic performing artists in the Greater Cleveland area,” they say. “We are keeping what to submit rather vague to make sure that we will get a wide variety of submissions. If you could help us reach out to the community, it would be much appreciated.”
They are looking for artists who live or can perform within a fifteen-mile radius of downtown Cleveland. To get more information on submitting a proposal, email thecityisourstage@gmail.com.
