Western Reserve Historical Society Kicks Off Jazz Appreciation Month

Sat 4/1 @ noon-1PM

Actually, since April is “Jazz Appreciation Month,” which was created by the Smithsonian in 2001, then you should make it a point to catch several of northeast Ohio’s excellent musicians in the next month at a venue such as the BOP STOP or BLU Jazz+ in Akron.

You can kick things off, though, at the Western Reserve Historial Society, where the Case Western Reserve University Jazztet will be regaling visitors with music by jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and others. The concert is honoring the legacy of Clevelanders Evelyn and Ernie Freeman, sibling musicians who graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music and played jazz, gospel, pop and classical music. (Evelyn led a swing band in the 1940s when women musicians in such bands were rare, let alone band leaders.)
