There’s not a whole lot to the 1946 musical film Centennial Summer. Linda Darnell and Jeanne Crain play sisters both enamored of a Frenchman (Cornell Wilde) who has arrived in the U.S. to work on the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876.
Jerome Kern composed the music; while Oscar Hammerstein II, Leo Robin and Yip Harburg wrote the lyrics to tunes such as “The Right Romance,” “In Love in Vain” and “All Through the Day.” None of the leads sang this music though; all of their voices were dubbed.
The film is the next topic of The Musical Theater Project’s Movies at Home series, led by its artistic director Bill Rudman. If you want to take part, start by listening to Bill’s intro which offers some background and points out things to look for. Then watch the film on YouTube.
Finally join Bill on Zoom for the discussion of the film on Thursday July 6 @ 7pm. It’s free and open to all. Here’s the link.
