This month’s Walkabout Tremont features the usual specials at the neighborhood’s array or diverse eateries and drinkeries, as well as live music here and there in local businesses. (Not much going on outside this time of year, but just wait until May!) The theme this month is “Jumpstart Your Heart” and there are plenty of places to take your sweetie for an early Valentine dinner.
While some have bemoaned the diminished opportunities to see art since the days of the old Tremont Art Walk, there are at least three new shows to check out this month.
Kaiser Gallery opens at new show by Fatima Matar, a refugee from Kuwait to Cleveland, who escaped with her daughter in 2018. She had a powerful show last year at Waterloo Arts, with pieces painted on old window frames she found, the only canvases she could afford. Her new show at Kaiser is called Look Closer! and deals with domestic abuse. The canvases contain small keyholes through which they can view what’s hidden, as the reality of domestic violence too often is. The show will be on view through March 2.
Over at Edison’s you can see more work by Tessa LeBaron, who recently had a show at Tremont’s Doubting Thomas Gallery. Her portraits and landscapes are colorful, with a strong element of fantasy.
And Doubting Thomas will be opening Ourobori, with new work by Nicholas Deveney, son of legendary artist Joan of Art (Joanie Deveny) and his wife Solita Deveney. Daine Carlisle will be providing music.
