Take in New and Ongoing Shows at Walk All Over Waterloo

Work by Buchi Upjohn

Fri 11/4 @ 5-9PM

There’s always something new to see at the monthly Walk All Over Waterloo art walks in the Waterloo Arts District, along with continuing shows such A Painter’s Table at Waterloo Arts featuring work by Katy Richards, Corrie Slawson and Nikki Woods.

Opening this month at Framed Gallery (6-9pm) is Fragmentation, paintings by West African native Buchi Upjohn, now based in Georgia. In his work, Upjohn uses oil, watercolor and acrylic on a variety of surfaces including canvas, burlap, paper, metal and wood.

He says “I am drawn to the idea of putting things together — bringing shapes together,” and indeed his paintings feature a riot of small shapes gathered together to form a larger image.

“Like fragments of broken shards, our diverse experiences are waiting to be spatially brought together: by us,” says his artist statement. “Such is art, and yes, they can actually shape our lives and work together for us — if we can see the beauty in the fragments of color and of life.”

This month Praxis Fiber Workshop’s gallery is hosting the opening of Tragic Miracle by Katlin Shae. In this new digitally woven work, Shae, who teaches at Kent State where she got her BFA, explores her relationship with her late grandmother, incorporating images and texts passed down from her into subtly textured and colored and diversely patterned pieces.
