Cleveland’s No Exit New Music, whose repertoire consists of newly composed cutting-edge pieces and avant-garde compositions that influenced them, have declared their current season the “Year of Surreality.”
The group will be making its debut at the Cleveland Museum of Art in a concert featuring the ensemble’s entire membership. The music that embraces the same methods as the surrealist art movement, delving into dreams, the irrational and the subconscious, enhanced by video and other visual imagery.
The musical selections mingle pieces written by the ensemble members Timothy Beyer and James Praznik with music written by actual surrealists and members of its precursor Dada movement (film of Tristan Tzara performing his “Dadaist Anthem,” E.L.T Mesens, Francis Picabia) and their contemporaries (Georges Auric, Darius Milhaud). The first half of the evening features these historical pieces, mostly for piano, while the second offers ensemble pieces accompanied by video.
As with all No Exit concerts, this one is free. The Cleveland Museum of Art’s page gives conflicting information about whether a ticket is required, so you might want register here just to be safe.
