Youngstown rockers The Vindys, named after the city’s longtime daily newspaper the Vindicator, the band debuted in 2013 but didn’t really break through regionally until just a few years ago
They released a seven-track EP Red Wine in 2014, which served to announce their presence, and the nine-track Keep Going in 2016, which gave them some serious momentum. That album got a big push from Cleveland’s late (and much lamented) internet radio station oWow, and they were tapped to played festivals such as Brite Winter and WonderStruck. They completed their last album Bugs during the pandemic, releasing several singles — “Want Your Heart,” “Morning Light, “Are You Ready” — to whet fans’ appetites and released it in 2021 when they could finally play to support it.
Their most obvious strength is frontwoman, singer/guitarist/lyricist Jackie Popovec whose bluesy, soul-inflected vocals evoke classic R&B vocalists such as Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner in the way she can be hard-hitting while stretching and bending her vocals like molten taffy. She’s strongly supported by the hard-rocking band whose harmony thicken and enrich the band’s sound.
They’ll be doing two shows at the Music Box this week, on Thursday November 10 with Huckleberry Funk opening, and on Friday November 11 with Goldpark.
