Like all other classical music series, Tuesday Music — the area’s oldest music presenting organization, formed in 1887, had to cancel or postpone its regular concerts. But it’s started something new that’s proving to be wildly popular: Music al fresco: Passport 2020, a three-event series of Sunday afternoon world music concerts on the lawn of Akron’s historic Barder House.
Yes, you may have noticed by the dates that they haven’t started and wonder why we say they’re “wildly popular.” Well, they originally announced a series of 3pm concerts and all are already sold out, so they added 1pm shows. Grab your tickets quickly! They’re limited to maintain social distancing and advance reservations are required.
The first concert, on Sunday September 6, features the Cleveland-based Russian duo: Siberian native Oleg Kruglyakov, who plays the traditional balalaika, and American pianist Terry Boyarsky. Together they play music drawing from a variation of Russian musical genres.
Sunday, Sept. 20, Kent’s Black Squirrels Winds will perform “Parisian Promenade.” The five Kent State University faculty members will play a program of works by French composters such as Jean Philippe Rameau and Darius Milhaud on flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet and horn.
Finally, on Sunday October 4, percussionists Matt Dudack, Tom Roblee and Peter Loferski bring “Found Sounds: Ghana, Trinidad, Brazil,” connecting musical styles from African, South America and the Caribbean.
Tickets are $20 per concert, $50 for the series. Patrons should bring their own chairs or blankets, with groups spaced ten feet apart, and picnics are welcome. Masks are required when not seated. Each concert is one hour with no intermission. Rain dates for each performance are the following Sunday.
