It seems like every area music organization — classical or jazz — is jumping up to celebrate women’s contributions of women this. And let’s hope it continues because only by showcasing women players and composers can the next generation of young girls be encouraged to join them.
The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra’s Women in Jazz series continues with a pair of performances features tuba player Velvet Brown and composer/pianist Ellen Rowe, both of whom have released numerous CDs as a soloist or bandleader. Both are also educators: Brown is a professor at Penn State while Rowe directs the jazz program at the University of Michigan.
The evenings’ program will feature the debut of a new piece by Rowe, commissioned by CJO. The performances take place at Akron’s BLU Jazz+ on Friday and at the Maltz Performing Arts Center in university Circle on Saturday. You ca also livestream the concert at home.
