Gordon Square Racial Equity Film Series Opens with Cleveland-Set Film

Wed 3/11 @ 6:30PM

CoolCleveland columnist Mansfield Frazier described the 2019 film Queen & Slim, directed by Melina Matsoukas, as “mesmerizing,” and “by far one of the best films of the year.”

He said, “White film critics just need to shut the fuck up about this flick, since they would be critiquing a side of life they don’t in the least understand. But whites who want to experience — at least for two hours — what it really means to be black in America, should flock to see Queen & Slim — and take all of their friends with them.”

Moviegoers of all shades will have the opportunity to see — or revisit — this film when it opens Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization’s third annual Racial Equity & Inclusion Film Series, taking place at the Capitol Theatre. As a bonus, some of the film as shot in Cleveland.

Admission is free, with a suggested $5 donation, although no one will be turned away. Following the film there will be a discussion at the XYZ Tavern, less than a block away with free food and a cash bar.

It will be followed on Wed 4/15 by Always in Season and on Wed 5/13 by Just Mercy.
