Cleveland Orchestra Concert Combines Sounds of Jazz and Italy

Jader Bignamini

Sat 7/16 @ 7PM

Italy and jazz will flavor the Cleveland Orchestra concert, “Pines and Fountians of Rome,” at Blossom Music Center this weekend.

The program opens with the Zodiac Suite, composed by jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams in 1945, performed by Columbus-bon jazz/classical pianist Aaron Diehl in its Cleveland Orchestra premiere. He’s joined by bassist Paul Sikivia and drummer Aaron Kimmel, both making their Cleveland Orchestra debut. It continues with Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s orchestral tone poems Fountains of Rome (1916) and Pines of Rome (1924).

Tying the themes together is the conductor Jader Bignamini, yet another Cleveland Orchestra first-timer. The 46-year-old Italian conductor was named music director at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra starting in 2020 and is also a huge jazz fan.
