Sat 10/15 @ 8PM

Sun 10/16 @ 4PM

Baroque chamber ensemble Les Delices opens its 2016-2017 with a program that’s a little bit offbeat for it. Called “Songs Without Words,” it takes a 17th-century approach to 20th century torch and jazz songs.

“Songs Without Words links the expressive, rich harmonies of these 17th Century songs and the bluesy chords of tunes that belong to the canon of jazz standards in this unique program,” the group promises. Baroque oboist Debra Nagy, viola de gamba player Emily Walhout and harpsichordist Eric Milnes will explore the confluences and connections between the baroque musical vocabulary and that of the 20th century in tunes such as Billy Strayhorn’s “A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing” and Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools.”

They’ll perform at SPACES Gallery on Sat 10/15 and Shaker Heights’ Plymouth Church UCC on Sun 10/16. Tickets: $25-$40.
