Sun 3/4 @ 7PM
It was a tradition at Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts each year to celebrate the birthday of Kent-based Egyptian musician/composer Halim El-Dabh, a retired Kent State professor. Last year it celebrated his 4096th birthday, as he liked to say, on March 4. And each year he performed his compositions — often new ones — and led musicians in community jam sessions.
Alas, that was the last time Halim himself was around to celebrate before he moved on to another plane last September 2. But the celebration goes on. On what would have been his 4,097th (97th) birthday, Standing Rock is hosting a celebration of his life.
The event will feature a performance of Halim’s composition “Ra and Apep” by Bryan Thomas and Jexo, “Lost and Found” by Ron Slabe from unreleased 2005 recordings, and videos of past performances.
It’s free and everyone is welcome. Bring your instruments and whatever refreshments you want.
