The appeal of the so-called “Great American Songbook” — pop and jazz standards and Broadway musical tunes penned mostly in the first half of the 20th century by writers such as Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Ira and George Gershwin, and Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart — never seems to go away. These songs form the basis of the repertoire of countless jazz vocalists and every mature rock & roller seems to eventually record an album of these standards.
On Sunday July 18, the Cleveland Orchestra, led by experienced pops conductor Lucas Waldin, will have a go at this repertoire. Their guest vocalist is New York-based singer/actor Capathia Jenkins, who has appeared on Broadway, TV and in films. Expect to hear tunes such as the Gershwins’ “Fascinating Rhythm,” Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s “All The Things You Are,” and Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s “Satin Doll,” with lyrics by Johnny Mercer.
