Retrospect

Looking back, we’ve seen this place gain confidence and assert itself in the 11+ years we’ve been calling it Cool Cleveland. We’ve reformed our government, launched a generation of top chefs, and funded our arts with a massive sin tax. In the process, we’ve become the quintessential rust belt chic magnet.

Our arts especially have entered a golden age like nothing we’ve seen in decades. Our story covers recent triumphs like the new MOCA, CMA upgrades, burgeoning neighborhood art scenes, and regional & national funding that is attracting artists & creatives from far & wide. Read how young & old, home for the holidays, can take organized tours of up-and-coming neighborhoods & projects. Party downtown, or all around town, on NYE.

Celebrate the year, and discover cool happenings, available on your mobile app or the site, and you could win a t-shirt just like Tim Cable. Spend time contra dancing in the National Park, enjoy latkes with your Blue Lunch, rock out at the Masonic, hand feed a chickadee, swing along with a Rockabilly Holiday, get loud or dig some Chinese food & a movie on X-Mas. Hashtag #CoolCleveland and help promote your favorite event this week & be the hero. In retrospect, that could be your best move. –Thomas Mulready

2013 In Retrospect
A Look Back Through the Eyes of Cle’s Art Community

2013 has been an outstanding year for Cleveland overall. The visual art community in particular had one of its best years in a long time.

All this positive change is only possible through the combined efforts of our passionate, dedicated and engaged public officials, cultural leaders & community members. We’ve asked a few of them to offer their insight into both the previous year and the upcoming one…

We may love Cleveland but it often gets hard always acting like its press agent.

We’ve all been there, but in some ways this stance is disingenuous when it comes to stopping urban sprawl and moving back to Cle proper.

One group hoping to plant a seed of rebirth is Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, which has scheduled its inaugural Cleveland City Life Tours taking place Sat 12/28 & Sun 12/29, as well as Mon 1/20

Artist Melinda Placko, working with the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning at the Fullerton School in Slavic Village, supervises the creation of a mural in the school’s gym.

While CAL’s programs using arts tied to curriculum usually take place in the classroom, Ms. Placko was able to take a few moments to talk with Cool Cleveland as she worked with the students and their parents, donning smocks and working on the mural to spell out the word “Fullerton.” YANEO.org.

I was all for the absurdly conceived, ridiculously titled and altogether phony War on Christmas long before it became fashionable.

My feelings don’t have anything to do with the baby Jesus or what his birth and life represent in terms of hope and spiritual renewal — two things which I dig the most to say the least…

SUGGEST: Did We Miss Something? Not so much a suggestion for a missed shop, but a comment and broader suggestion… a lot of these places need some real help with their websites or simple mentoring for their online presence. I don’t necessarily have the know how of a website developer/designer but there has to be some free or cheap help out there for small businesses like these…

Wow! Some with the nerve to tell the truth!!

It almost seems odd Mansfield, having just read your article, but I think you actually have a lot in common with Jesus. You both are black. You both speak the truth and neither of you are afraid to ruffle a few feathers…

Get Creative in Kringle’s Inventionasium Thomas: WHERE can we go, as a Jewish family, on Christmas Day, to HELP some organization that serves dinners, or gives out gifts, or is otherwise helpful to people in need?…

MANSFIELD: Tokenism at Its Absolute Worst Was totally disappointed in those windows. They looked shabby, as if they were dragged out of storage some place, and didn’t reflect this community at all. We’re not Currier & Ives or Downton Abbey, we’re Cleveland. There was nothing that reflected the diverse, colorful folks we are. Horseshoe–back to the drawing boards w/this one.

My family and I were walking around downtown the evening of the Public Square lighting celebration. My daughter was picked to dance with the Toy Soldier at Tower City as a side note. We walked past the displays and I noticed the differences described by Mansfield. What I was not prepared for was my 6 year old daughter saw the differences. Then, in her bold fearlessness, asked me why…
