Raw

Raw

My favorite things start out that way. Nice and tart with a bit of sting. Almost off-putting, brandishing the arrogance of the new. The good ones stay that way, reinventing themselves, avoiding banality, seeking out the margins. It’s one of the things I love about this place. It’s never been lamestream.

We’ve got videos and features on a handful of raw affairs worthy of your attention this week: EightHoursRaw at Hedge Gallery (video with Hilary Gent), RAW Cleveland’s En Masse (feature), and WMC4 (feature).

Eating it raw is how we do it: a fermented foods demo from LEAF, a workshop on saving your seeds, a vegan book club, a Pop-Up Party at the Plaza, a NewBridge summer cookout, a wine & chocolate fundraiser for Central America, the National Hamburger Festival. Use #CoolCleveland to recommend your favorite jam on Instagram or Twitter and you (and your jam) could be a winner.

Where can you find the raw stuff? KEN @ Now That’s Class, Melissa Ferrick @ The Grog, Canine Fun Days @ the Metropark, Uzizi @ Wilbert’s, Kamal Abdul-Alim @ Nighttown, a Youth Festival @ St. Clair Superior, the Asphalt Cinema @ Kamm’s Corners, Evelyn Wright @ Lincoln Park, Matthew Keane @ MOCA. Get it in real time on the CC app and win like Patty Novak and her little superhero. It’s always better in the raw. –Thomas Mulready

Not Just Another Art Opening
RAW Cleveland’s En Masse is an experience

As RAW Cleveland prepares for its next large-scale group showcase, En Masse at the Agora on Sat 8/17, its main organizer, Jacqueline DelBrocco, took time out of her very busy schedule to help clear up exactly what this unique event is — and what it isn’t.

Says DelBrocco, “I can say ‘live music, live fashion, live art’ as many times as I want, but until people see it all come together in person, it’s impossible to communicate the energy and excitement that truly makes this a one of a kind experience…”

Cool Cleveland got a rare peek at the Armington Raptor Center hidden inside the Perkins Wildlife Center and Woods Garden at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Harvey Webster, Director of Wildlife Resources is getting ready for Birds, Beasts, Brats and Beer on Thu 8/22, which is the only time during the year when the public is able to grab a Great Lakes beer and a brat and get up close and personal during the event’s Animal Encounter.

Watch along and meet George the Bald Eagle, Omega the one-eyed Eastern Screech Owl, Sweeney the Red-Tailed Hawk, Vinnie the Turkey Vulture, a matched pair of Barred Owls, Beaker and Archie, who is 38 years old, possibly the oldest Barred Owl known. CMNH.org

Of Rite & Riots
Joffrey Ballet + Cleveland Orchestra team up once again

We’re going to see Cleveland Orchestra and Joffrey Ballet of Chicago at Blossom this weekend, a program that features Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring with the Joffrey’s reconstruction of Vaslav Nijinsky’s original choreography.

This is the choreography long believed lost, the show that sparked the 2-day-long riot at its premiere in May of 1913…

“This” being one of the columns I know full well in advance is going to cause consternation bordering on opprobrium towards me from some quarters of the community; a few folks will no doubt be looking for a rope with which to string me up with, or a rail to ride me out of town on… but so be it, I’m cool with that…

Cleveland is disappearing, bit by bit.

It’s like a slow motion hurricane. Or a tornado that takes its time. Slow. Not like a fire that devastates a place quickly. It’s a slow death. Death nevertheless…
