Rally

The earth isn’t the only one rallying this time of year. Nanette Yannuzzi & Ann Torke are revisiting art in the mind; we slipped over to Oberlin to see what was on their mind. We’re rallying to reform Ohio’s animal cruelty laws. And you’ll be interested in the plans for the “Shoppes On Clifton” at W. 117th. Spoiler alert: those plans don’t include the historic Fifth Church, and some citizens are rallying.
Mansfield’s musing on land use & housing issues in his new LandMIND column, while Susan Schaul takes us on a field trip to Blue Pike Farm in St. Clair-Superior, and Richey Piiparinen takes issue with Mayor Jackson’s immigrant attractions strategy, or lack thereof. Anastasia, meanwhile, rallies a week’s worth of music in her RedHotSOUNDS column. We’ve got cool picks for every day this week, and a mobile app for organizing it all. This week CC reader Chantal Sudbrack wins our $20 award for using the app that she calls “a godsend.” We can rally to that.
The kids can hunt eggs at the Botanical and Heights High alums start shooting a movie about their school. We pop into Nighttown for a chat with Jim Wadsworth, the guy who’s made that place one of the top jazz venues in the country. Roldo honors Ned Whelan, who knew how to do aggressive, honest reporting. Roldo carries on the tradition. We all rally to that cause. –Thomas Mulready

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson’s recent comment about immigration has drawn some local ire.
At his annual remarks on the state of the city, the Mayor — in response to a question of how Cleveland can end its population decline by attracting immigrants — stated: “I believe in taking care of your own…”

In 1970, Oberlin professor and artist Athena Tacha created an exhibition and catalog on conceptual and performance art, called “Art In The Mind.” Well, there was no actual exhibition… just the catalog.
But that catalog has become legendary and has been influencing artists and curators for 43 years. It contained dozens of conceptual art pieces and proposals for performance art works that may have never been realized anywhere but in the mind of the reader.
Now in 2013 Oberlin Associate Professor of Art Nanette Yannuzzi, who has Tacha’s old job, and Ann Torke, Associate Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, are reprising that catalog and inviting artists to respond to the very powerful ideas and concepts and performance proposals in the “Art In The Mind” catalog.
They’re hosting a virtual exhibition called ENACT and inviting more than 50 artists to submit ideas, concepts, proposals and… well, anything. Cool Cleveland’s Thomas Mulready proposes to interview the two curators.

For those of us who didn’t attend Cleveland Heights High School, “Forever a Tiger” is a popular phrase attached to the large school whose only point of reference for many is the fact it’s located near the Cedar Lee Theatre.
In keeping with the aforementioned tagline, alumnae Mai Moore (1995 graduate) and Traci Easley (1992) are attempting to capture the Heights High School experience for all to see with a new documentary project that hopes to be in theaters by the end of the year…

“We’re sort of like a throwback to the old Supper Club days, like London House in Chicago or some of the big rooms in New York City. We have a lot of performers who play here say it reminds them of back in the day… We’re keeping the flame going.”

Stevie Wonder could have seen this coming, way back when the voters of the City of Cleveland changed the Charter, tying the number of city councilpersons to population figures… but without spelling out an exact way to accomplish the task….
